Synopsis

Seventeen-year-old Bianca Piper is cynical and loyal, and she doesn’t think she’s the prettiest of her friends by a long shot. She’s also way too smart to fall for the charms of man-slut and slimy school hottie Wesley Rush. In fact, Bianca hates him. And when he nicknames her "the duff" she throws her Coke in his face. But things aren’t so great at home right now. Desperate for a distraction, Bianca ends up kissing Wesley. And likes it. Eager for escape, she throws herself into a closeted enemies-with-benefits relationship with Wesley. Until it all goes horribly awry. It turns out that Wesley isn’t such a bad listener, and his life is pretty screwed up, too. Suddenly Bianca realizes with absolute horror that she’s falling for the guy she thought she hated more than anyone.

“No matter where you go or what you do to distract yourself, reality catches up with you eventually.”

Words To Describe The Book

Honest and Realistic

My Thoughts

I actually considered picking this book up because of a review I read by another blogger and I'm super glad I did (with a cherry on the top!), I read the book in one sitting because I loved it so much. THE DUFF was a realistic, heartwarming, coming of age short read which I could relate to in many ways.

The main character Bianca was strong as well as being fragile, she was a headstrong character who wasn't afraid to speak her mind with firm opinions, she goes through very difficult situations in her life but holds it in and bears with the pain because she knows if she says too much it would hurt the people she loved, she was selfless and loyal which meant I connected well with her character and I wanted to get to know her better.

At first I didn't know what to make of Wesley's character, we were only able to know him through Bianca's prespective but as the book progressed his story unfolds and there seems to be a deeper part to his character then what first meets the eye.

The book consists of situations which some teenagers these day face like divorce, an alcoholic parent, her mother leaving, they were all realistic situations and the strength of the main character shows how there is always a way to get out of these difficult moments in life. Her journey from the start to the end was full of ups and downs but her perservance made me want to be stronger as a person.

I loved the book thoroughly and would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to pick up an honest great read which personally I loved!

  2. The characters in this novel were wonderfully developed. Bianca is a tough, smart-mouthed girl trying to deal with a horrible time in her life. Wesley oozes charm and alternately, disgust throughout the book. However, even he has more to his story then sleaze and sex. He is that guy you love to hate and then end up just loving since he is so much more then he seems. Casey is a great character, wanting to help Bianca even as she is shut out again and again. Jessica shines as the kind-hearted friend who just wants everything to be okay.
