Review of Born At Midnight by C. C. Hunter

Book Title: Born at Midnight
Author: C. C. Hunter
Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin
Publication Date: March 29, 2011
Page Count: 416

Synopsis

One night Kylie Galen finds herself at the wrong party, with the wrong people, and it changes her life forever. Her mother ships her off to Shadow Falls a camp for troubled teens, and within hours of arriving, it becomes painfully clear that her fellow campers aren’t just “troubled.” Here at Shadow Falls, vampires, werewolves, shapshifters, witches and fairies train side by side learning to harness their powers, control their magic and live in the normal world. Kylie’s never felt normal, but surely she doesn’t belong here with a bunch of paranormal freaks either. Or does she? They insist Kylie is one of them, and that she was brought here for a reason. As if life wasn’t complicated enough, enter Derek and Lucas. Derek’s a half-fae who’s determined to be her boyfriend, and Lucas is a smokin’ hot werewolf with whom Kylie shares a secret past. Both Derek and Lucas couldn’t be more different, but they both have a powerful hold on her heart. Even though Kylie feels deeply uncertain about everything, one thing is becoming painfully clear Shadow Falls is exactly where she belongs…

Favourite Quote

“I mean, if your about to tell me something like I'm dead, that i need to start acquiring a taste for blood, and I can't even eat sushi, I wont be able to handle it. Or if you're going to tell me that I'm going to start howling at the moon, eating peoples cats, and will spend the rest of my life having to get waxed if I want to wear a bathing suit, then I don't think I can handle it, either. I like cats and I tried waxing once, and that hurt like a son of a gun."  - Kylie

Word To Describe The Book

Gripping

My Thoughts

I don't know where to start with this book, it was definitely one wild read, born at midnight held my attention from the start till the end, not a dull moment to be found. All the different elements like the mystery, romance, action, adventure all contributed to make this a thrill packed book and definitely has you all over it (There are hot guys!)

Born at midnight seems to be a promising start to a series, the whole concept of having a camp with supernaturals drew me in, from the start there was a sense of mystery created as soon as you meet the main character Kylie, there was an unlimited amount of mystery with various different of characters which presented a depth to them making them more interesting.

I had mixed feelings about the main character, one minute I wanted to hug her, the next minute I wanted to bang my head against a table, but I didn't mind that she inflicted so many emotions in me because she was strong headed and didn't easily surrender. There were points where the decisions she make are rather rash but I always managed to forgive her.

I want to put it out there that there is a LOVE TRIANGLE! I know many people feel differently about it, in this case I was feeling sorry for Kylie because her choices were hard especially as both guys are yummy. The story develops well, there wasn't a point where the pace was too slow, the author manages to keep the reader on their toes throughout which I loved about this book. I'm definitely going to pick up the next book because I really like the direction it's headed in and can't wait to carry on Kylie's adventure even if it includes more head bashing!

Pick the book up and give it a chance, you'll probably enjoy it as much I did!

Feature and Follow (5) & TGIF (6)

Feature and Follow (5)

The blogs featured this week are Charissa Books and Underworld Love Addiction!

This week's question:

Q: Activity! Dreamcast your current read.

Currently I'm reading Born at Midnight and I'm nearly finished, I find it terribly hard to cast people as characters because I don't ever think I would do the book characters justice!

So here we go:

Kylie                                                                                                                Derek
Leven Rambin
Max Irons
Lucas

Gaspard Ulliel

Do you think I've done them justice?
If this is your first time on my blog, I hope you liked the post and if you would like to follow me you can do it via GFC or linky followers and leave the link to your post below so I can do the same!

TGIF (6)

TGIF is a weekly feature
created and hosted by the awesome Ginger at GReads
that re-caps the week’s posts and
has a different question each week.

This Friday's Question:

Show Me Your Cover: What are some of the worst book covers, but hold some of the best stories inside? Don't be embarrassed, show us your cover!

I have read quite a few books which have covers I don't think are very appealing, but like they always say 'don't judge a book by it's cover'. Some end up being the most amazing books I've read (it does happen!)

Pandemonium - The cover seems so animal like, as though the face is popping out of an animal's body *shivers*. The book itself was amazing!
City of Bones - I've actually never really liked any of the covers in the series, they just never seemed to connect with me much, there is just something about it I can't quite put my finger on.
Along for the Ride - To me it just didn't reflect the atmosphere of the book, the legs weren't appealing much to me either!

I'm not much of a fan of the Soul Screamer covers, too much of a colour blinder.
If you've seen the UK covers of the Chicagoland Vampires you wouldn't like them much either, they're really unrealistic. But both series are super awesome!

leave your TGIF link in the comment box so I can check out your choice of book covers!

Review of The DUFF by Kody Keplinger

Book Title: The DUFF (The Designated Ugly Fat Friend)
Author: Kody Kelplinger
Publisher: Poppy
Publication Date: September 7, 2010
Page Count: 304

Synopsis

Seventeen-year-old Bianca Piper is cynical and loyal, and she doesn’t think she’s the prettiest of her friends by a long shot. She’s also way too smart to fall for the charms of man-slut and slimy school hottie Wesley Rush. In fact, Bianca hates him. And when he nicknames her "the duff" she throws her Coke in his face. But things aren’t so great at home right now. Desperate for a distraction, Bianca ends up kissing Wesley. And likes it. Eager for escape, she throws herself into a closeted enemies-with-benefits relationship with Wesley. Until it all goes horribly awry. It turns out that Wesley isn’t such a bad listener, and his life is pretty screwed up, too. Suddenly Bianca realizes with absolute horror that she’s falling for the guy she thought she hated more than anyone.

Favourite Quotes

“No matter where you go or what you do to distract yourself, reality catches up with you eventually.”

“Wesley Rush doesn't chase girls, but I'm chasing you.”

Words To Describe The Book

Honest and Realistic

My Thoughts

I actually considered picking this book up because of a review I read by another blogger and I'm super glad I did (with a cherry on the top!), I read the book in one sitting because I loved it so much. THE DUFF was a realistic, heartwarming, coming of age short read which I could relate to in many ways.

The main character Bianca was strong as well as being fragile, she was a headstrong character who wasn't afraid to speak her mind with firm opinions, she goes through very difficult situations in her life but holds it in and bears with the pain because she knows if she says too much it would hurt the people she loved, she was selfless and loyal which meant I connected well with her character and I wanted to get to know her better.

At first I didn't know what to make of Wesley's character, we were only able to know him through Bianca's prespective but as the book progressed his story unfolds and there seems to be a deeper part to his character then what first meets the eye.

The book consists of situations which some teenagers these day face like divorce, an alcoholic parent, her mother leaving, they were all realistic situations and the strength of the main character shows how there is always a way to get out of these difficult moments in life. Her journey from the start to the end was full of ups and downs but her perservance made me want to be stronger as a person.

I loved the book thoroughly and would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to pick up an honest great read which personally I loved!

Author Interview With Charity Shumway

Hey there,

I want to start off by saying how grateful I am that I got to do this interview with Charity Shumway, I can't thank you enough!

INTRODUCING CHARITY SHUMWAY!
Charity earned an MFA in creative writing from Oregon State University and a BA in English from Harvard University. Her first novel, Ten Girls to Watch, comes out this July. In 2007, she spent nine months reporting on the 50th Anniversary of Glamour’s “Top Ten College Women” contest, which served as the inspiration for her book. Her writing has appeared in that magazine and has also been published by Fitness, Ladies Home Journal, and Garden Design, among others. She lives with her husband in Brooklyn, New York.

Author Website: http://www.charityshumway.com/

1) What three words best describe TEN GIRLS TO WATCH?

Fiction but true. (By which I mean the book is definitely a novel, not a memoir, but I think for anyone who has ever been young and overwhelmed, or really any age and desperately in need of some guidance and encouragement, the book really captures that experience).

2) One sentence why readers should go and read TEN GIRLS TO WATCH?

Oh man, I don't quite know how to answer this one! I'm going to defer to you. :)

3) Which character or woman from your book do you think you are most like?

I'm quite a bit like Dawn, the novel's narrator. Like her, I really struggled in my first years out of school. I'm hoping, as the years go by, to mature into someone much more like her mentor, Helen, but it hasn't quite happened yet!

4) Are any of the experiences from the book based on someone you know or events that happened in your life?

In the novel, Dawn lands a job working on the 50th anniversary of Charm magazine's "Ten Girls to Watch" contest, tracking down all the contest's past winners. In real life, I had a very similar job, working on the 50th anniversary of Glamour's "Top Ten College Women" contest. While the details of Dawn's experiences and the stories of the women she interviews are all fictional, in real life, the women who won Glamour's contest were just as amazing as the women in the novel.

5) If you could be any book character for a day who would it be and why?

If I could be any character in TEN GIRLS TO WATCH, I'd be Dawn's boss XADI. She always capitalizes her name, but that's just the start of forcefulness. She's smart and great at her job and not at all concerned with niceties. I personally can barely smile at someone without thinking back on it later and wondering if I smiled too much or not enough or was it weird to smile when I did? I'd love to be someone totally and completely above all those kinds of worries for a day.

6) What was the last most AWESOME book you've read?

I just finished THE FAULT IN OUR STARS by John Greene, and it was terrific. Smart and urgent and honest, the sort of book you'd stay up all night reading, and a total sob-fest, in the best kind of way.

I'm really glad I got to do this interview and I'm grateful to have been able to do it, I recommend that you all go and pick up Charity's new book TEN GIRLS TO WATCH which is coming out in July, you won't regret it!

My Book Boyfriend #2 - Tucker Avery

It's Wednesday today which means it's that time of the week where I get to fangirl over one of my favourite book boys!
My Book Boyfriend is hosted by Missie at the Unread Reader

At the moment I'm reading Hallowed so I thought I just had to do Tucker Avery! He is the sort of guy I desperately want in my life, since the moment I met his character I fell in love, his personality is completely adorable and makes my heart flutter every time. His kind, caring, loving, heartwarming, and a perfect boyfriend!

Description of Tucker:
Her brother resembles her in nearly every way: same hazy blue eyes, same tan, same golden brown hair, except his hair is short and spiky and he’s about a foot taller. He is definitely part of the cowboy group, although toned down from some of the others, wearing a simple gray tee, jeans, and cowboy boots. Also hot, but in a completely different way than Christian, less refined, more tan and muscle and the hint of stubble along his jaw. He looks like he’s been working under the sun his whole life.

I'm not entirely sure who would make the perfect Tucker but he definitely has to make me swoon!

Quotes:
“Tucker: "But she gave me the perfect gift."
Clara: "What?"
Tucker: "You.”
“What do you see in a guy like Christian Prescott?" he asked me that night when he dropped me off from prom. And what he was really saying then, what would have come through loud and clear if I hadn't been so blind was, why don't you see me?”

"What did the fish say when it hit a concrete wall?" he
asked me. We're sitting on the bank of a stream and he's tying a fly onto my fishing rod, wearing a cowboy hat and red lumberjack-style flannel shirt over a gray tee. So adorable.
"What?" I say, he grins. Unbelievable of how gorgeous he is. And that he's mine. He loves me and I love him.
"Dam!" he says."

I could literally go on with these quotes forever, they make me feel all weak in the knees.

I don't think these pictures do Tucker justice so I would love to know who you think would be perfect as Tucker!
Leave your link below in the comment section so I go over to your blog and check out your book boyfriend.

Review of Ten Girls to Watch by Charity Shumway

Book Title: Ten Girls to Watch
Author: Charity Shumway
Publisher:
Publication Date: July 31st 2012
Page Count: 320

 Synopsis:

Dawn West is trying to make her way in New York City. She’s got an ex-boyfriend she can’t quite stop seeing, a writing career that’s gotten about as far as penning an online lawn care advice column, and a small hometown in Oregon that’s her last recourse if she can’t make next month’s rent. So when Dawn lands a job tracking down the past winners of Charm magazine’s “Ten Girls to Watch” contest, she’s thrilled. Not only is she being paid to interview hundreds of fascinating women, but she’s also sharing office space with “Secret Agent Romance,” Charm’s resident dating columnist, and he just happens to be giving her butterflies. As Dawn gets to know the life stories of these former winners, she’ll discover that success, love, and friendship can be found in the most unexpected of places. And even more importantly, she’ll find that though those who have gone before us can be role models, ultimately, we each have to carve our own way. Both an insightful look at the trajectory of female experience over the past fifty years and a witty coming of age story, Ten Girls to Watch introduces an unforgettable new voice in women’s fiction.

PRAISE FOR TEN GIRLS TO WATCH

"Once you turn the first page, you won't be able to tear yourself away from Ten Girls to Watch. This is a thoroughly charming, sassy, highly satisfying debut from a writer with a rare gift: She sounds like your best friend, telling a story you don't ever want to end. I adored this book."
- Sarah Pekkanen, author of These Girls

"Ten Girls to Watch will inspire you to follow your heart and believe in your own dreams, no matter how many challenges or obstacles the universe throws your way. It's a heartwarming story about a gathering of extraordinary women who offer wisdom, warmth and humanity, as well as shoulders broad enough for all of us to stand upon. I can't wait to give this book to my sisters and best girlfriends."
- Nicolle Wallace, New York Times bestselling author of Eighteen Acres

Words To Describe The Book:

Refreshing, uplifting and inspiring.

My Thoughts:

Ten Girls to Watch was an inspiring book with inspiring stories within it, I felt by the end of the book I was left with a warm feeling and enlightened by all the wonderful profiles of women leaving me feeling motivated and fascinated by the impact of the book as a whole.

As I began reading I honestly didn't know what to expect, I didn't immediately connect with the book, I felt it was going to be too predictable and typical, during the first chapter it goes straight into old memories which left me confused for a while because I felt I didn't know enough about the character to understand what was happening, but after a few chapters I was hooked, I loved following Dawn on her journey, I could relate to her easily because of all the challenges she's faced with continuously, she shows endless amount of hard work, strive and determination as a main character which meant I became very fond of her.

Another point which I felt gave the book a whole new dimension of interest was all the profiles of women used throughout the book. I loved reading about how successful women can be when they try hard, I was very much inspired by all the different advice Dawn receives from interviews throughout the whole book, it gave me much to think about and ponder. However there were points where I felt that there was an overwhelming volume of stories about the different women which meant that many of the women were easily forgettable even though I felt all of them were too amazing to forget!

I thoroughly enjoyed Dawn's character and how she dealt with her issues, she never made stupid decisions that annoyed or frustrated me which I like in a character. The writing was light, refreshing and enjoyable. By the end I felt like I knew Dawn so well as a character which left me feeling utterly pleased for her achievements.

Overall I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to pick up an uplifting and inspiring read with an awesome female lead character! Go and pre-order the book NOW!

TGIF (5) - Supporting Characters

TGIF is a weekly feature
created and hosted by the awesome Ginger at GReads
that re-caps the week’s posts and
has a different question each week.

This Friday's Question:

Supporting Characters: We tend to gush over those main characters the most, but what about those supporting roles? Who are some of your favorites?

Finnick Odair (The Hunger Games):
He was actually the first character that came to mind. At the beginning when you meet Finnick you think it's all about the good looks and how he has it all (well he is HOT!), But as you read on you start to see more depth to his character, you get to see a more emotional side of him and you start to realise that there is more to him then what first think, his character development really presents his bravery, fear and pain that his endured which may be the reason I fell in love with his character!

Tod Hudson (Soul Screamers):
He is definitely a character who seems to always be there to help by popping up here and there. I think he has an interesting past and there is more to him then what meets the eye, I believe he still cares about others and does his best to save people when their in trouble without really expressing too many emotions.

Let me know who you think is a great supporting character! leave your TGIF link in the comment box so I can check it out!

This week's question:

Q: This Sunday in the U.S. is Mother's Day. In celebration, what are some of your favorite books with strong mother/child relationships?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think some YA books don't really emphasise the mother/child relationship, I read many books where the main character may either hate their parents or couldn't careless how their actions could effect them whether it's the mother or father. However, sometimes beautiful mother/child relationships bloom and are firmly in place throughout some books.

One mother and daughter relationship which I really like is Clara and her mother Maggie (Unearthly), I felt like they always could count on each other at tough times, Clara seemed to be able to approach her mother most of the time she felt like she was having trouble.
I also like Cammie and her mother's relationship (Gallagher Girls) because in many situations they are always there to give each other support and I loved how Cammie always kept her mother on her mind.

My Book Boyfriend #1 - Alex Sheathes

My Book Boyfriend is hosted by Missie at the Unread Reader

As it's my first time participating in this meme I want to start with one of my ultimate lovers!

*Drum roll* ALEX SHEATHS! (Delirium) *faints*

Alex's personality had me head over heels for him straight from the start, I felt like there were too many reasons for why he had me going crazy.

Name: Alex Sheaths
Book: Delirium
Age: 19
Hair Colour: Golden Brown
  •  Hair is like leaves in autumn just as they're turning
Eye Colour: Amber Eyes

“I love you. Remember. They cannot take it”

“Everyone is asleep. They've all been asleep for years.
You seemed ... awake.' Alex is whispering now.
He closes his eyes, opens them again.
'I'm tired of sleeping.”

“Are you sure that being like everybody else will make you happy?"
"I don't know any other way."
"Let me show you."
And then we're kissing. Or at least, I think we're kissing—I've only seen it done a couple of times, quick closed-mouth pecks at weddings or on formal occasions. But this isn't like anything I've ever seen, or imagined, or even dreamed: this is like music or dancing but better than both.”

In this gif I swear he looks so much like the Alex I imagined in the book!

Review of Deception by Lee Nichols

Book Title: Deception
Author: Lee Nichols
Publisher: Bloomsbury
Publication Date: June 2010
Page Count: 310

Synopsis:

When Emma Vaile's parents leave on mysterious business trip, it gives her the perfect excuse to be a rebellious teen. Throw some parties, get a tattoo (or maybe just a piercing), and enjoy the first few weeks of her junior year. Then her best friend stops talking to her, the cops crash her party, and Emma finds herself in the hands of a new guardian her college-age "knight in J.Crew armor," Bennett Stern and on a plane to his museum-like mansion in New England. After enrolling at Thatcher Academy, Emma settles in by making friends with the popular legacy crowd. But she can't shake the strange visions that are haunting her. She has memories of Thatcher she can't explain, as if she's returning home to a place she's never been. Emma doesn't trust anyone anymore except maybe Bennett. But he's about to reveal a ghostly secret to Emma. One that will explain the visions . . . and make Emma fear for her life.

Favourite Quote:

“All I know is that I'm in love with you,' he said, almost angrily. 'That the sight of you, the scent of you, the sound of your voice - I can't help myself, I can't stop it, I can't think of anything else. You've made me completely useless.”

Words To Describe The Book:

Actually surprisingly good!

My Thoughts:

When I started reading this book I didn't expect it to be as good as it turned out to be, I thought it would probably be a rather forgetful and quick read (I was being judgemental and stupid). But I have to admit I devoured most of the pages, one by one. The first few chapters didn't particularly grab my attention straight off but it kept me reading, from the beginning there seemed to be a dark and abandoned atmosphere created which held a sense of mystery. As the story unfolds the secrets within the book begin to unravel themselves and you're dragged into the book.

There was also a mystery of the past created by the author which continued to haul the reader in. The main character Emma was likeable because of her personality and kindness but there were times when I felt like screaming and shouting at her for making rash decisions. There were other characters who you really start to like but I would have liked to see more depth and development in them.

When your halfway through the book the excitement begins to build and the concept of ghosts really starts to blossom with new enemies and faces along with a good portion of action. However not forgetting the love element of the book (which there was!) goes down some twisty roads towards the end and had me wanting to bang my head against a wall. Overall, a great read so I suggest you give this book a try!

Hey there!

The blogs featured this week are The Housework Can Wait and Ali's Bookshelf Reviews!

This week's question:

Q: What is one thing you wish you could tell your favorite author?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think this question is meant to torture me, my list of favourite authors is everchanging and long. To name a few are Suzanne Collins, Meg Cabot, Lauren Oliver, Ally Carter, Sarah Dessen and loads more!
Well first of all I'd probably end up speechless for a VERY long time, than I would express my love for them and their books and would have a breakdown right there and then.
But in my dream world I would have a chance to fangirl about their characters together and ask them how they were inspired to write such wonderful books!

Review: Abandon by Meg Cabot

Book Title: Abandon

Page Count: 320

Synopsis:

But if she lets herself fall any further, she might find herself back in the place she fears the most. And when Pierce discovers the shocking truth, that’s exactly where John sweeps her: The Underworld.

Favourite Quote:

"Check yourself before you wreck yourself"

Words To Describe The Book:

Intriguing in some sense.

My Thoughts:

I felt like there were both ups and downs for me whilst reading this book for various reasons. With Meg Cabot being one of my favourite authors I just had to consider picking up this book. There were some elements of the book which I enjoyed thoroughly. One of those was the Greek mythology about the Underworld, I felt that gave the whole story a new dimension and gave it something to build on, it also gave me a chance to refresh my memory and be able to access a whole different world. Another really high point was the character's background/back story, the main character Pierce slowly unfolds her story through occasional flashback to her old memories, as a reader there was the whole sense of suspense and intrigue which kept me reading.

However with this book I felt there were some downsides. When I first started reading this book I felt rather sorry for it, I had just finished an amazing book and I was in one of those reading slumps so I'm not sure if that affected any of thoughts about the book. While reading the book I constantly felt as though the story was dragging on a bit, but not entirely in a bad way, but I felt the story wasn't getting to the main point quick enough, it wasn't until the last few chapters that the author finally reveals the climax of the book.

There were actually a few points in the book where I felt I couldn't carry on, the beginning didn't seem to grab my attention but I think what kept me hooked was the memory flashbacks which popped up here and then keeping me reading the book. There was another element which I liked which was the fact the love element wasn't played up or made the centre of attention, this presented the chance to further explore other aspects of Pierce's life and really get into her death and experiences.

Overall I felt the book kept me hooked on and off but I didn't completely feel it lived up to the standards which I was hoping for, especially as I normally completely love all Meg Cabot books. However I can really see the plot line developing in future books and the author may have reserved the best for the next books so I'll hold on tight and wait to get the  next book and see how it progresses!
